Why should we take LPAI seriously?
Avian Influenza is a global disease with significant consequences
In contrary to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) disease, Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza causing less fatality cases in chicken population, and only causing mild respiratory illnesses in human. However, there are several factors that make LPAI a public health concern. Briefly, this including three points below :-
Avian influenza is known to be able to rapidly change/mutate. Hence, raising a concern on its ability to be evolving into becoming a deadly virus. Studies shown that H9N2, though LPAI, it has served to be a precursor gene donor to several outbreak causing by HPAI viruses
There have been prolonged outbreaks of low pathogenic AI viruses among domestic birds, in several regions of the world despite ongoing control efforts
"For these reasons, rapid identification and control of avian influenza outbreaks occurring in poultry or other domestic birds are essential measures to protect human health".
